The light emitting diode (LED) is technology that actually goes back more than a century, but only in the past two decades has it emerged to become arguably the most popular type of energy-saving illumination. Today, LED lights are replacing the incandescent bulbs all thanks to their energy efficiency, longevity and surprising durability.

The question is why LED light manufacturers have pursued this type of lighting for vehicles which are not normally thought of as being in need of energy efficient light bulbs.

Longevity: A typical incandescent headlight bulb may last for 1000 – 1200 hours while a typical LED headlight will last for over 50,000 hours of continuous use. This difference alone combined with the price drop of LED lighting has caused people around the world to switch over to LEDs for their headlights and taillights.
Durability: Incandescent bulbs are fairly fragile and even one solid bump may be enough to cause them to fail all due to their construction. However, the LED versions are built differently so that they are naturally shock resistant. It takes a far greater impact to affect the performance of an LED bulb.
Reduced Glare: The light from LEDs is better directed than their incandescent counterparts and they create less glare as a result. This makes it safer for oncoming drivers and creates fewer accidents as a result.
Versatility: LED light manufacturers have created their bulbs in a number of different colors to help accentuate vehicles of all types. While the laws governing the colors of headlights, turn signals and taillights are very strict, additional lighting that may be used to illuminate the vehicle can take advantage of the color variations.
Finally, the energy usage of LED lighting is but a fraction of their incandescent counterparts which means far less pull on the vehicle’s battery when using the lights, air conditioning and stereo all at the same time. In turn, this provides greater performance as less energy is being consumed by the lighting system.
All in all, LED light fixtures in cars and trucks are changing the way people are thinking about their vehicles when it comes to illumination.
